Jamaica’s red clay has been used by the Taínos, one of the groups native to the Caribbean Islands, for their own pottery long before the arrival of Columbus.
MIXED MEDIA
The Japanese Garden
In a country as densely populated as Japan, a garden provides a source of relief and serenity in crowded, urban areas. Learn about the features of the Japanese garden, what they symbolize, and visit the Como Ordway Memorial Japanese Garden with artist Kitty Kremer. Then create your own miniature Japanese garden.

BOOK ARTS
Handmade Papers/Books
The art of papermaking has a long and interesting history. Papermaking was introduced to Japan from China around 1400 years ago. Trickster Tales
The Caribbean Islands had two major cultural influences beside that of the
Native Taino people-Spanish and African cultures. Work with actor Brian
Grandison as he retells the many African trickster tales found on each island. Choose your favorite. Then work on characterization, expression, and
costuming, as you act out a favorite trickster tale.

TEXTILES
Carnival Costumes
All the islands of the Caribbean celebrate Carnival. The largest and most well-known celebration is held on the island of Trinidad-Tobago. Look at costumes from carnival celebrations. Then create your own fanciful headdress and outfit using glitzy fabric, sparkling sequins, feathers and more working with artist Laurie Watson.

SCULPTURE
Vejigante Masks
Imagine yourself as a vejigante or a clown-like character dressed in bright colors wearing a mask with horns and a costume with bat-like wings parading into our Friday celebration. Brought to Puerto Rico by the Spanish, the vejigante tradition was influenced by both African and Taino cultures. Work with artist Julie Kastigar Boada to create your own special vejigante mask.

PUPPETRY
Gyotaku Fish Pole Puppets
Many Japanese get much of their food from the ocean, since the islands of Japan are surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. Besides eating fish, Japanese use real fish to make prints. This technique is called Gyotaku or “fish impression”. Work with puppeteers Julie Kastigar Boada and Gustavo Boada to create giant fish, colorful puppets inspired by Gyotaku printing technique for our Friday celebration.

Ukiyo-e Prints
Ukiyo-e prints or woodblock printing dates back to the Edo period in the 17th century and continues as an art form in modern day Japan. Working with a soft linoleum, artist Laurie Watson helps you create one and two color block prints featuring landscapes and animals of Japan. Then create your own signature stamp to “sign” your prints.

beauty of the animals and habitat of Japan through drawing and painting.

The ArtStart roster of artists for our 2012 summer programming includes both artists and arts educators who represent diverse cultural backgrounds and art forms. All have a deep commitment to the arts and nurturing each person’s creative artist within. ArtStart artists and staff cordially invite you to start your summer with the arts!

Generally, an ArtStart residency consists of 20 student contact hours over the equivalent of 5 days with at least one core group of students who work with the artist daily. Each residency includes a teacher staff development component and a celebration of student work at the conclusion of the residency. In addition, many unique art-making materials are provided by ArtStart from its ArtScraps Creative Materials store. For the cost of a residency, please contact Cindy Smith, Events Coordinator or call 651-698-2787. Cindy Smith will work with your school to develop a residency to fit your specific needs.

If a school is unable to follow this model, we recommend selecting an ArtStart Community Workshop, which involves less contact time with an artist and flexibility of grouping. Community Workshop pricing is available upon request.

ALL DAY 8:30 am-3:45 pm
Signatures is a project-based arts program for Teens who want a hands-on
approach to learning new skills or applying skills they already have attained to a real-world problem or opportunity that adds value to the community. Teens plan, design, and produce the final product working with professional artists who offer guidance and assistance throughout the experience.

The 2012 project Guide to the Twin Cities for Teens is a 2 week experience in which you work as a team to create and publish a guide for teens of unique places in the Twin Cities. Working with artist Kitty Kremer and Felice Amato, you plan your week and travel each day by van to art museums, parks, cultural or historic sites, stores, farmer’s markets, and restaurants to learn about the space and programs. You record your impressions using digital cameras, original art, and creative writing. After getting permission from the owners and operators of sites you visit, you work as a team with Kitty and Felice to design and self-publish your Guide to the Twin Cities for Teens, incorporating photos, drawings, writings, and other materials you collected during your site visits. We order copies of the guide and they are distributed at ArtStart’s ArtScraps. (Limited to 10 participants.)

The musical theme of the 2012 Children’s Concert is based on an African tale “The Animals Share”. Set to music by composer Jan Gilbert, the piece is scored for symphony orchestra and African drum ensemble. Children create shakers, masks, and pole puppets in pre concert activities. They parade into the concert space led by dancer Christopher Yaeger proudly displaying their art work. These artifacts are also incorporated into the concert performance to add visual excitement. Special guests include Nothando Zulu of the Black Storytellers Alliance who narrates “The Animals Share” and African drummers Ghana Mbaye and Papis Diop, who perform with the symphony.

A highlight of the year for ArtStart artists, the Children’s Concert includes pre-concert art and dance activities that are incorporated into the live performance of the music. This interactive approach to music encourages children to respond to the music through active listening and creative movement. We call it live theater in which performance and music appreciation intersect.
