Signatures A STUDIO ARTS PROGRAM FOR TEENS

ArtStart is launching a new summer art opportunity for youth ages 13 years (or entering grade 7) to 16 years old. Signatures, a studio-based program, offers youth intensive instruction in visual arts. All classes are taught by professional artists or educators who have expertise in working with students and are recognized for their own art/ performances both locally and nationally. Participants display works on the last day of the program. Students may enroll for a half-day or full day program for one week. Limited scholarships are available.
Time:
9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Tuition:
Full Day: $205/student
Half Day: $120/student
All-day students: bring a bag lunch.

*Those who are interested in becoming an Art- Start intern must register for Signatures 2008, as well as participate in intern training classes from 3:30-5:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday during the week of the Signatures program.

To qualify for the training you must have attended at least two years of the ArtStart K-6 program and/or be 13 years of age or entering 7th grade. New interns will be assigned if there is a vacancy. Current interns who participated in the Signatures 2007/Intern Training Program are encouraged to register for these classes as well.

201 Drawing and Painting
Learn from nationally recognized painter Armando Gutierrez. Create an expressive portrait of yourself using acrylics, as you learn color theory, drawing and painting techniques.

202 Altered Art
See what happens when you look at familiar objects through new eyes. Work with artist Felice Amato to turn old books, tins, and other objects into new creations.

203 Mosaics
Join mosaic artist Laurie Watson and create your own mosaic. Learn how to design, cut and shape tile pieces, install and grout tiles. Additional materials fee $10.

204 Jewelry
Design, create, reuse are words that describe this class. Work with artist Stacie Forbes to create your own jewelry using unique beads, bits of old jewelry and reuse materials. Additional materials fee $10.
205 Printmaking
Join an artist to explore a variety of printmaking techniques. Then produce your own fashion statement, personalized cards, and other art works.

206 Book Arts
Back by popular demand! Work with book artist Lynn Mueller to create art books utilizing a variety of media and construction techniques from collage to printing.

207 The Art of Felting
Join textile artist Sara Langworthy and learn the art of felting. Learn how to transform wool fibers into felt and create your own unique products. Additional materials fee $10.

208 The Art of Flow
Join artist Felice Amato to learn the basics of yoga. Then explore a variety of art forms, including gestural drawing and painting, as you unlock your creative artist within.
Internship Training - Monday-Thursday : 3:30-5:00 p.m.
Internship training is a prerequisite for all students who plan to apply to be paid interns in ArtStart's summer arts program for children ages 4-12 years. Interns must be entering 7th grade and have attended at least two summers of ArtStart programming to be eligible to apply for the internship training workshop.

The workshop covers theory of child development and art education; emotional and social concerns of young children; crisis management; how to work effectively with artists, and, preparing for an internship at ArtStart's summer camp. Sessions are led by artists and educators fromArtStart and Saint Paul Public Schools.
